View Full Version : This guy is awesome... (I'm serious)
I love the band sevendust, I know you've all heard me say that at least 3 times a night in raid chat, but this guy obviously loves them too. He is an amazing muscian, and it was great to hear that part above the rest of the music for once. And on top of that he's just -good-. Enjoy. :)

I love the band sevendust[/b]
Warning! Full on off-topic stuff ahead.
I checked out Sevendust and I'm just too old to have people yelling at me like that. Of course way, way back in the day I listened to stuff like:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0R9_ZLxsmmg
and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcSbqaIK_iA...ted&search= (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcSbqaIK_iA&mode=related&search=) [Parental advisory: I'm a parent and I advise you that you, yes you, might be offended by this clip]
But now http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CX-6Ej2lnwg is more my speed (skip to about 1:20 for the duet). I'm a sucker for anything with soaring female vocals.
A couple other random bits to enjoy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63KdJ4btumE - bangin'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOk87ShxP8k...ted&search= (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOk87ShxP8k&mode=related&search=) - also bangin' (and possibly offensive)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2WURHY3D4A - emo in a quiet way
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Zd_oIFy1mxM&...ted&search= (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Zd_oIFy1mxM&mode=related&search=) - I'd love to see this live. I'm not sure any recording could do it justice.
Laiqendi you amaze me at every turn, I think i listen to holiday in cambodia at least once a week.
Oh and the cannon thing was pretty hott too.
Ive been pluggin it for a long time but check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYCzDhaRV60 The video is kinda meh so id advise tabbing out and just giving it a listen. And yea im not right if i dont hear this song at least once a week.

Yeah it's 18 minutes long. The longest song played live I'm sure.
Hahaha, keep it coming! I love all the music getting posted up here so far. :D
And yes, Lad, Andy Mckee is awesome. I really liked how he played, and he's obviously mastered his instrument. And yes, the kid is emo, but his covers for Sevendust are great!
And Laiq, your listening to the wrong sevendust songs. ;P
There are plenty of sevendust songs where the lead singer just sings instead of yells...though there are heavy songs (their whole first album really) that are "growling".
If I had to recomend one of their albums to you, Laiq, listen to some songs from "seasons". Much more actual singing, and less growling.
But keep posting them links! If 4 more people post some music they like after this post I'll post some other bands I think are good. (or people that are talented)

I'm not quite ready to say goodbye to this thread :) Here are pointers to three albums I really like. There are a lot of people in these projects from more mainstream bands (Dave Lombardo, Mike Patton, Dan the Automator, Del the Funkee Homosapien) but these might have slipped under the radar.
Fantomas - The Godfather (http://youtube.com/watch?v=vQtXxaC87Ks)
Lovage - Book of the Month (http://youtube.com/watch?v=KwBRkN9__uc)
Deltron 3030 - Virus (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Gf5yOqEp9OY&mode=related&search=)
Not so much the music video itself (There is no video) but the song is pretty cool. It's not metal and it's more classical.

NOFX (again):
Bottles To The Ground (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHKQw6i3LJo)
Live in Osaka (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=573P5q8u8SM)
Good NOFX videos are hard to find because the only music video they have made since '89 is Triple Rock. They forbid any radio station or MTV from playing anything of theirs. I believe they actually sued MTV Brazil for showing it. And live recordings from some dude in the crowd on his cellphone uploaded to youtube isn't much for quality. Anyways, I recommend you ignore the dancing Guild Wars video in the first one.

Mine and Sarahs song. /wrist music is good, I dont care what anyone says. You should snuggle up to Uela while playing that song, it always ends in good things.[/b]
*swoon* I LOVE that song. I didn't think there was a man alive who would like it ... except Ben, I guess. Of course, now the song will just make me even more bitter cause there is some guy out there who does like it and he's not single. :P Anyway, any songwriter who wrote 'Give me my money back, you bitch' can have a /wrist song or two. Love Ben to bits.
I don't love the Postal Service either (although I like them all right) and that doesn't make anyone soulless. Awesome comment coming from robot Assault, too yet!
I'd add some new stuff to the thread, but I've been out of touch for a long time and I think I don't really have anything super cool to add. Oh ... well, how about a couple classical tunes I love...
Barber's Adagio for Strings (http://youtube.com/watch?v=2NYHD-XD44s) maybe a little trite, but this is one that gives me the shivers.
Brahms' Symphony Number 3 (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZMzPkBti11s) omg I love that melody. There's an amazing French horn solo in there ... I LOVED playing it. Haunting. You know Brahms only wrote 4 symphonies and he lived a damn long time for a composer. He's like my hero that way. Quality over quantity, my friend Haydn.
Beethoven's 5th, 3rd Movement (http://youtube.com/watch?v=9Mt7NIPFgQk) Again the horns ... right at the beginning.
Ennio Morricone's Gabriel's Oboe (http://youtube.com/watch?v=PRb8KKyenSY) From the soundtrack for The Mission. Morricone's soundtrack makes me want to play oboe so bad. (And finally something in a major key, although maybe not out of the realm of /wrists yet)
One more ...
Glenn Gould and a Bach piano concerto (http://youtube.com/watch?v=OFuUrUWfo5Q) for some obligatory Canadian content and oops, a return to a minor key. I don't find Bach to be brooding, though ... more angry. For a neat view of Gould, check out this one. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=qB76jxBq_gQ). And yes, you hear him singing along in all the best of his recordings.
And I'll stop there cause I doubt there's that much love for the classics, I promise these ones are good, though. Youtube surprised me with having some amazing classical performances posted.
Pika.
Oops ... I thought I'd better add a little punky stuff (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huYenwRaknI). And one of my newer loves, the Tick's battlecry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9Hff859Rb8).

First time I saw them in concert, it was after Lateralus had come out. They were plugging a lot of those songs...really the greatest moment of the concert was when they played the last three songs in order - Disposition, Reflection, and triad (it was rumored to originally be a 30 minute song and not split up in to three different songs). You can imagine, it was an incredibly long jam session ending in Triad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR6cWXSfR1I), possibly my favorite song simply because of the intense instrumentals. When I saw it performed, it came with the drummer from Tomahawk and their keyboardist helping and Maynard playing the reverse-headed guitar in the video. If you got time, watch Danny just fucking beat on those drums flawlessly and turn it up as load as you can stand. Its a moving song...it really is. And it cements my statement that he is, quite possibly, the best drumer Ive ever had the pleasure of listening to.

There's a whole subculture into the issues of copyright, sampling, remixing, and public domain -- for a few years I followed a mailing list (http://detritus.net/contact/rumori/) about this kinda thing but I think it might be defunct now. One time someone somehow got their hands on a years worth of the little fragments of songs that radio stations use to promote singles, and made a track playing them all, two at a time, start to finish... it was interesting.
Sorry for the derail :) Which I can't say I'm a big fan of most mashup/collage type work, I find the issues fascinating.
Negativland (http://www.negativland.com/) is worth referencing while I'm here, they actually put together some surprisingly good tracks. Once in a while. And they had an epic battle with U2 (http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/3.01/negativland.html) (song here (http://www.negativland.com/audio.html)) where they were the more left wing. How many bands can claim that?

One last fiddle post before I move on (well, maybe). Jesse Zubot plays violin and mandolin, Steve Dawson plays acoustic, national steel, and hawaiian guitars. Together they make Zubot & Dawson and play, well, that stuff together. Oh yeah they're from Vancouver (although I would have sworn Victoria originally), which isn't Calgary, but hey it's still western Canada.

ed's wake (http://www.blackhenmusic.com/artists/zubot_dawson/music/EdsWa.mp3) (I've seen them live a few times, apparently this song is in fact written in response to a donkey named Ed dying while one of them was on a pack trip. Also Zubot is the only person I've ever seen spontaneously use a mic stand as a slide on the neck of a violin.)
Many more samples are available if you dig down into their releases on their record label (http://www.blackhenmusic.com/), run I believe by Steve Dawson himself (who also has a pretty decent solo album out).

I heard them again last week on the radio, and then I found them in the iTunes 'bargain bin' this morning. The snippets sounded like Thom Yorke circa Pablo Honey or The Bends so I figured why not. Right now, I'm loving this album. It's like if Queen or ELO were putting out new stuff and maybe had Thom Yorke singing for them. Annnnd ... from the production quality of the videos, I'm pretty sure they're probably just as 'undiscovered' as The Killers were when I stumbled on them. >.> At any rate, check out Muse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jV1bRfLHA3A&feature=related) even if just for the fabulousness of this video.
Pika.
P.S. oh yeah, I'm sure Flight of the Conchords has been mentioned, but for those of you under rocks like me, here's a song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGOohBytKTU) for you studs who need to go spend time with 'the girl'. Strangely, my last boyfriend was from NZ.

And since I'm here and finally going through some of the posts over the last while, I thought I'd share a Canadian fiddle player I think Nort missed: Final Fantasy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMMJkutV_kE&feature=related). Yes, really ... it's easier to find if you add 'Owen Pallett'. He's apparently done some work with Arcade Fire but I like him much more (yes, blasphemy, I'm a Canadian and I DON'T care much for Arcade Fire).
And Rild, I think that my R.E.M. favourite (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtDWTmQMwr0&feature=related) is even sappier.

I realize there's no Magnetic Fields links up and they're one of my favorite bands. They do by far the best breakup song ever (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pp5eBxU248Y) (though that's a thread in itself). They also have an assortment of standard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_2Xptbc8i8) bitter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktCjNlKHF_A) love songs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWBxU-Jlad0). Then there's hilarious (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZEDayXuxEQ) similes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sc1e9ZlqTuI) and straight-up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wS-fEniZJKo) catchy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhO1XlDFqxE) pop songs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mmlii4kw7xY).

Daler Mehndi is awesome, a friend dug up a bunch of his songs that I've still got .mp3s of. Mayanna introduced him to me when we met back in 2002 with this particular song, apparently it was making the rounds at OSU back when she was there. The best part is he's having so much fun doing that and not taking it seriously.

The closest I can find to samples is this band member's (http://www.myspace.com/sayokoparis) myspace page, which has one track off that CD and a few from a new project Dousage 2 (which looks to be exactly the same people with a new spelling, and I may well have to check it out at some point). So apparently everyone in our guild hates country music. I was going to try to sway you all but I can't find some of the tracks I would really recommend anywhere available on the web.
However, I did find this video of the Old 97's performing Dance With Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDDyD0Hj5n0) that has a Battlestar Galactica tie-in! Though it's not very country compared to say, "Big Brown Eyes" (http://www.seeqpod.com/search/?plid=19c7b21eb6) which I like better.
Also there's Ryan Adams (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IhDW18rxyY) who's not bad.
Or Wilco who's one of my favorite bands, seen 'em three times live. See "California Stars" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGlsfM3Tf70) (this video reminds me of Zhek..not sure why) or "She's a Jar" (http://www.seeqpod.com/search/?plid=3a07d61516) which is one of my favorite songs ever.
Calexico (http://www.seeqpod.com/search/?plid=025aeca5fc) is also really great. Anyway, I could go on and on, but I'm sure everyone stopped reading a while ago. I had to post for my own peace of mind.

Well it's not country (I'm working on that) but Babe, Terror (http://www.myspace.com/babeterror) has released his first EP for free online (http://www.archive.org/details/BabeTerrorEp). Warren Ellis described it as:
Babe, Terror is a band (or maybe a single guy?) out of Sao Paulo who appear to be fashioning their recordings in a tumbledown Portuguese church somewhere off the ninth circle of Hell. It has the same feel as the earliest Sigur Ros, but significantly more lo-fi, Satanic and loveless.

That's seriously the stupidest stuff I've had the misfortune to click on in a while. By which I mean to say that I think it belongs in the OTHER youtube thread.

Seriously? He's been a massive hit around the WoW community for years and getting more traction among the general gaming community since Portal came out. Blizz brought him to the WWI this summer too. Sorry it didn't entertain.

I Heard the Voice of Satan (http://www.warrenellis.com/?p=6646)
I felt dirty watching that one Nort. Like I did not know him well enough to listen to him sing that. If he was any number of my crazy friends and they said "dude you have to listen to this song I wrote", it would be on thing but it made me feel creepy and voyeuristic.

Me too, which is especially interesting given that he had dozens of albums and must enjoy the songwriting and singing (google the guy).

The Pogues - Fairytale of New York (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ff3aoSyYOVs)
Counting Crows - A Long December (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNF1a-ZG1uc)

The Ramones - Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FA-HMqBQpQs)
The second one doesn't really follow the theme, but I found (my favorite band) the Mountain Goats doing John Prine's "Christmas in Prison" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A11OEaHKddI) and Robert Earl Keene's "Merry Christmas from the Family" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxuA-UZcpIY)

I dunno if you're joking but maybe not cause I spose the song could have been big before you were born. It's a cover of Stevie Wonder's Part Time Lover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ll6LLGePYwM) (the video is pretty fab, by the way ... brings back memories of Video Hits (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RG_O-b44g9I) with Samantha Taylor (win a trip to see Honeymoon Suite at Expo 86 YEAH)).
Anyway, the Lost Fingers put out a whole album of their take on songs from the 80s (appropriately titled Lost in the 80s). I have a soft spot for wacky covers from folks like the Gimmes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpb0XB-gT_U&feature=related) and Mike Flowers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vy1ueZf1WMQ), but I'm torn as to whether they're something worthy of an award nomination. With only (probably) 2 Canadian songs on the album I'm disappointed that they couldn't stay CanCon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CanCon) at least!

With only (probably) 2 Canadian songs on the album I'm disappointed that they couldn't stay CanCon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CanCon) at least!

I hate posting right on someone's heels (so check out Kub's link too) but I stumbled across this the other day: Someone found and posted a mix of songs and radio movie promos that The Cramps used to play before gigs. It's a bit before my time but still manages to remind me of countless hours spent milling about waiting for a band to take the stage.

I know you were all EAGERLY SEEKING MORE INFORMATION on this, as it happens it came up over the holidays talking with some friends and I dug up a link, and now I just stumbled onto this post so... here is the track in question (plus a version for 2002 country hooks, and one for umm spanish language radio?

Im bringing it back baby!
Recently, Ive been listening to Benjy Ferree (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8feEmuNvz0), black joe lewis and the honeybears (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayebYim1l1I) for its crazy retro appeal and Phoenix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrbGpvOulec).
Anything new on anyone elses playlists?
-Etri
Why do the horns always get the shaft. Yea there are 3 of them but they all are each playing an instrument, I mean all of the guitar players got their own banner, it is just not fair. As for new stuff Etri you will be happy to hear that the latest from your boys' in the Animal Collective is getting heavy rotation at work. Got tuned into these guys a coupla weeks ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghhIQvDsNKs&feature=related they are kinda sugary with a feel best described in http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemail49.html (Be sure to click the skinny blonde girl easter egg at the end.). Not sure if I've ever linked this song but its a gooder http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1nn7lXP7WQ.
OOOOOOOH in music news I got to met Robert Earl Keen and his band last week at a show they did here in Iowa City. Awesome set, awesome dudes, terrible crowd, I'd like to see him someday in the south where his following is massive and the shows are huge partys. If you ever get the chance to see him be sure you know http://www.robertearlkeen.com/index.php?page=rektv.
Also I'm not very computer savy how do you have links say what you want like instead of http.www etc it would just say Band Name?
Type in your text like "Hanna Montana"
Then highlight the text. At the top of the text editor there is this button -http://nutchomp.net/images/editor/createlink.gif. Put in the URL of your video. Whatever text you had highlighted will now link to it.

Haha, I had totally forgotten to get dwarf invasion! Thanks Kub.
Nort has linked to the Warren Ellis (http://www.warrenellis.com/) page a few times. Its a pretty good page to keep up on regularly. He recently sponsered a free cd by a new artist called Inspired Flight (http://inspiredflightmusic.com/). Its nothing amazing or revolutionary, but its free music so if you are into that kind of thing, give it a look-see.
I also forgot to mention Girl Talk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7n1kuFDpLQU). Saw him live a few months back and it was a pretty cool show. Also got to see the GZA at the same show but was not very impressed.
-Etri
GZA was here in IC not too long ago, as much as I love the Clan I could't bring myself to go cause i figgured it would be terrible and by all accounts it was!

Man you guys move fast. I picked up two albums via iTunes last weekend, I'm liking both so far:
Grand Analog - Metropolis is Burning. You can check out the first single here (http://ugsmag.com/2009/05/grand-analog-i-play-my-kazoo-new-album-out/), the entire album is pretty solid in my opinion. Canadian hip-hop, str8 outta Winnipeg.
Nadja - Skin Turns to Glass. Some of their music here on their myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/nadjaluv). It is "doom ambient" or... something.
And yeah Warren Ellis is great, although I'm like 80 posts behind on the feed and I don't really like the hauntology stuff he's obsessed with lately.
That Kazoo song is ill-sick. As the coloured children say.

I thought I posted this at the start of the week but... apparently I failed.
I picked up a Woodhands (http://www.myspace.com/woodhands) album last weekend, and have decided it's pretty awesome - check out I Wasn't Made For Fighting (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eLfpqxremM) or the other stuff on their myspace.
Got to see them play last night, they put on a pretty insane show. Plus Andrew W.K. and Anvil showed up as surprise guests on the other stage.
Did the A.W.K. appearance in fact mean it was time to party at a higher level than you had been previously?
and that video was awesome.

Someday I will post more Sled Island stuff for now I present from last week Hank Pine and Lily Fawn (http://hankandlily.com/):
Hank is a tall, dark, and mysterious figure in goggles and a mask that carries his dead girlfriend around in a garbage bag, plays the cello, keyboards, guitars, ukulele, accordion, drums and whatever else he can get his hands on.
Lily, a half-deer, half-human forest creature, that tap-dances and plays the musical saw, the trumpet, the theremin, the flute, and hits the drums like a six-foot sledgehammer.
Finally, I have fulfilled a life long dream of hearing someone ask the soundguy for "a little more saw". Here are some youtube videos:
The Bar at the Bottom of the Sea (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSqyjamT73I)
The Angel of the West Wing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2zc1NKaLSY)

Hi guys, long time no talk. This is a pretty good video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GugzLSbOQE
Been awhile but here's some stuff that's been rocking my world lately.
Old hats to the leafers I'm sure but if you haven't heard it it's new to you, the Weakerthans are pretty (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rq_s_q0u2DA) - good. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rvKD2PDeik)
Still on the bluegrass kick, Butch and Peggy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGpP3GoK_lk),lousy audio 8(, is nearing a hundred listens; The Avett Brothers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aE7rkSELM3I) are also good times. But if you're not killing your woman its not bluegrass (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWJdY9be-CA).
And the regee kick, Toots (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7aNFEWbdBA&feature=related)baby always Toots (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eATaV2umnEs), some Deckker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5JHGi0awgc), and some Bunny (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGFiYRKVQsc&feature=fvw) will cure just about any bad mood you can cook up.
Also because it's awesome El Paso (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SgLrFHs0Jk)
ASSAULT look! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZU-hJW7FfQ&feature=related)
