my dad has a standalone one that works almost exactly like a tivo(i believe). the only thing is i dont think you can directly download programs(on demand feature), you have to record them yourself. from what ive seen of it it could do everything i wanted and im a video nut. but personally if i was going to get one id just make one myself. my cousin is in the process of making one out of an old computer of his and he told me some of the cool features which sound pretty much just like any PVR you can buy. a nice feature you might like is the fact you can network it to your other computers for easy file transfering.

this is what my cousin is using and i believe he has had sucess http://www.gbpvr.com/index.php?option=com_...9&Itemid=35 (http://www.gbpvr.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=35)
if your interested there is alot of documentation (http://www.gbpvr.com/pmwiki/) about how to set it up and what you can do with it(homeade plugins, and lots of customizable shit), the only downside is it wont really be plug and play, you will have to set it up yourself(which im told was really easy with their instructions). but it is free besides the hardware, so if you have an old computer and maybe even a capture card your pretty much already setup.

edit - i forgot to mention the fact that once you have a computer setup to your tv there is all the extra cool stuff you can do with it, like setup emulators, music players etc. thats another huge bonus of going this route. i thinks there is actually some cool plugins for accessing your music/video library over the network from your main computer too.

They either are TiVos, or they are not. Get the real thing.
