Now that Xaandr has reached 70, I've decided that I might actually try to be somewhat serious with him, instead of using him as a time killer or 'fart around with' character. I'm not expecting to be a sub in the 25-man raids because there's just too much stuff I'd need to do with him to get him close to that. However, I wouldn't mind getting involved in some K'zhan raids and, perhaps, some ZA raids (once I have him better geared, of course).

That being said, would it be worth my time to stay retribution? Since I'm going to be focusing more on 5-man content with some 10-man content on the side (hopefully) and probably a lot of solo content, would it be worth my time to do some reading and come up with a good ret spec instead of the goofy one I have now or are retribution paladins not that hot of a comodity? I've seen where there are some pretty nifty PvE ret builds which includes getting kings and such that would make them a more valuable party member.

From what I've seen Ret Paladins work best in groups with other paladins...and really shine there. Shizz I'm sure can shed some light on that.

My rogue's Karazhan run uses 2 prot paladins to tank and it just tears things up, so that's another viable thing for you there.

In 5mans, you wont have any problems with dps comparing to other dps classes. Retadins are quite up there for burst dmg and as things die fairly quickly in 5mans, you'll stay competitive.

Anything higher than 5man and Ret Pallies rely on synergy. More paladins allow the retadin to keep up several judgments with crusader strike as well as providing the retadin with needed blessings such as salv/might/wisdom. If you have a prot paladin, sanctity aura will increase their threat output by an absolute tonne. More threat, more dps =]

A shaman for windfury will make you shoot past everyone in the dps charts where single targets are concerned. As about 55% of your dps will be affected by WF totems... hell yeh! Resto shaman should drop WF over their +heal/dmg totem if there is more than 2 melee in the party. Warriors and Paladins <3 WF totem so damn much.

You can also off tank things in ret build.. for example, I OT'd some of Alar's adds during phase2 when the original tank died. Piece of cake seeing as you're already wearing plate, have a increased threat button and can put out some decent dps even with a 1h weapon.

As for build, the standard 5/8/48 is http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=sxZxhZVfMthcuiIot and would most likely be the best if you wanted to be regarded as full on dps. Although, you could also consider http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=sxZxG0hZVfztbcuihot if you wanted some offtanking utility. I'm a stickler for choosing a job and sticking to it so I tend to choose very job orientated builds without any regard to other options.

Gear wise... get yourself 9% hit if you ever are going to raid (3% from talents) and the rest, str and crit. You'll like the Tier gear more than I do due to +dmg coefficients of SoC but str/crit will win every time when you have to decide =]

Badge gear is awesome and so is the s3 pvp gear.

Check out the Retribution Theorycraft thread on EJs.... full of so much win and a cool spreadsheet to do stat checking with =]
